First, so you know who's talking: the Steppa team writes this blog. We're not a neutral reviewer, so this post sticks to things you can check for yourself, and it's upfront about how you can lose money.

Key Takeaways

  • Steppa is a real iPhone app with 4.6 stars from about 1,700 App Store ratings, as of October 2026.
  • Steppa takes no cut of the prize pool; for most players it charges a service fee of $0.50 plus 4% of the stake, shown before you pay.
  • You can lose your stake: miss one day's goal and you are out, with no partial payout and no refund once a challenge starts.
  • Winnings land in your balance at settlement, and you cash them out yourself to PayPal or a US bank account.
  • Steppa only emails from playsteppa.com and never asks for a password, card number or verification code by email.

What Steppa is

Steppa is an iPhone app for step challenges. You join a challenge and pay a stake up front. Every day of the challenge you have to hit the same daily step goal as everyone else. The prize pool is split among everyone who finishes.

Your steps come from Apple Health on your iPhone. Steppa never counts steps itself, and steps typed into Apple Health by hand never count. An Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, Oura or Whoop works if it syncs into Apple Health.

How the money works

What happens
Your stakePaid when you join and goes into the prize pool
Steppa's cut of the poolNone: the whole pool goes to the finishers
Service feeFor most players $0.50 plus 4% of the stake, shown before you pay
Creator fee5% of the stake, only in a public challenge another player created
Miss a dayYou're out, and your stake stays in the pool for the finishers
FinishYour share of the pool, your own stake included, lands in your balance
Cash outYou send it yourself, to PayPal or a US bank account

A challenge settles at 12:00 UTC two days after its last day. That gap gives every player at least a full day for a late watch sync before the results are final.

How much you win depends on how many people miss a day. If nearly everyone finishes, the pool pays back roughly the stakes, and you win little or nothing on top. Steppa never promises a profit.

What you can check yourself

You don't have to take our word for any of this:

  • The App Store. Steppa has 4.6 stars from about 1,700 ratings, as of October 2026. Read the low ratings too, not just the high ones.
  • The reviews page. playsteppa.com/reviews reads the App Store rating every day and shows the average of all ratings. The written reviews it lists are 4 and 5 stars, and the page says so.
  • The Terms. The Terms spell out the rules, the fees and who can play.
  • The join screen. The service fee and what you'll pay show up before you pay.
  • Your Balance Activity. Wallet, Balance Activity shows your cash, any pending payout and any promo credit, and lists your payouts.

How you can lose money

The honest part. Steppa is built so that the people who finish are paid by the people who don't. That only works if the rules are strict, and they are:

  • Miss one day and you're out. There's no partial payout and no "best of". A day you came up 200 steps short counts as missed.
  • No refunds once a challenge starts. Not for a busy week, an injury or a change of mind. The rule is the same for everyone.
  • Late steps don't count after settlement. Steps that reach Steppa after a challenge settles don't change the result.
  • Hand-typed steps never count. Adding steps by hand breaks the Terms and can cost you your entry and your account.
  • Devices aren't added together. Apple Health counts each step once, so wearing two trackers doesn't double your steps.

Stakes are kept low on purpose. Only stake an amount you'd be fine losing.

What happens when something goes wrong on our side

Genuine errors get refunded: a double charge, a charge for a challenge you never got into, or a cancelled challenge. A public challenge needs a minimum number of paid players. If it's short when joining closes, it's cancelled and every player is credited back automatically. Nobody loses money to a cancellation.

If a payout fails or a bank sends it back, the money returns to your Steppa balance and the app tells you. Our guide to Steppa payout not working explains every payout message.

Is Steppa gambling?

Steppa isn't a game of chance. There are no odds, no draw and no house to play against. Whether you win depends only on whether you hit your own step goal every day, and everyone who finishes gets paid. Paid challenges are for adults 18 and over, and they're available where Steppa's Terms allow. None of this is legal advice for where you live.

How to spot a fake Steppa email

  • Player emails from Steppa only come from playsteppa.com, such as [email protected].
  • Steppa never asks for your password, a card number or a verification code by email.
  • You only ever enter bank details on the Cash Out screen in the app, never in an email or a chat.
  • joinsteppa.com is a real Steppa address, but it's only used to contact brands and creators about working together. It never sends player emails.

If an email asks for any of those things, it isn't from Steppa, whatever the sender address says.

How to reach a person

Email [email protected], or tap Email, the last row under Help & Support on the Profile tab. The team reads it Monday to Friday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Steppa a scam?

No. Steppa is a step challenge app on the App Store with 4.6 stars from about 1,700 ratings as of October 2026. Players stake money, the ones who hit their step goal every day split the pool, and they cash out to PayPal or a US bank account. You can still lose your stake if you miss a day, so only stake what you're fine losing.

Does Steppa actually pay out?

Yes. When a challenge settles, at 12:00 UTC two days after its last day, each finisher's share goes into their Steppa balance. From there you cash out yourself to PayPal, which works outside the US too, or to a US bank account. The minimum payout is $25.

Is Steppa gambling?

Steppa isn't a game of chance. There are no odds and no draw: whether you win depends only on whether you hit your own step goal every day, and everyone who finishes gets paid. Paid challenges are for adults 18 and over where Steppa's Terms allow. This isn't legal advice for where you live.

How does Steppa make money?

Steppa takes no cut of the prize pool. For most players it charges a service fee when you join, $0.50 plus 4% of the stake, shown on the join screen before you pay. In a public challenge another player created, 5% of the stake goes to that player as a creator fee.

Can I get a refund on Steppa?

Not once a challenge has started, and that rule is the same for everyone. Genuine errors are refunded: a double charge, a charge for a challenge you never got into, or a cancelled challenge. A public challenge that is cancelled because too few players joined is credited back automatically.
