The best STEPN alternatives skip the NFT sneaker. Sweatcoin pays free coins for steps and still offers a crypto token, WeWard, Macadam and Evidation pay small amounts of real money, Runtopia rewards tracked runs, and Paceline gives brand rewards for any workout.

Key Takeaways

  • STEPN needs an NFT sneaker before you earn anything; every alternative here is free to start.
  • Sweatcoin is the gentlest switch: free coins for steps, with an optional route into the SWEAT crypto token.
  • WeWard, Macadam and Evidation pay real money, but only a few dollars or pounds a month or a year by reviewers' estimates.
  • Runtopia keeps STEPN's run-tracking feel and pays Sports Coins for PayPal cash or gift cards, at a low rate.
  • Paceline rewards any workout by heart-rate minutes, with points for brand offers and no money at risk.

STEPN asks you to buy an NFT sneaker, then pays GST and GMT tokens for GPS-tracked minutes outdoors. AliDropship's May 2026 review puts entry sneakers at about $20 to $50 and earnings at about $1 to $2 a day, and the GST token is down more than 99% from its April 2022 high. If you want to earn from walking without that upfront cost and price swings, here are six options.

What STEPN does well

STEPN turns outdoor walks and runs into a game with gear to collect, repair and level up, and it pays in tokens you can trade rather than in-app points. It is still running years after the 2022 boom. Each sneaker gives Energy, where 1 Energy is 5 minutes of earning, and Energy refills every 6 hours, per its whitepaper.

The limits: you must buy a sneaker before you earn, earning stops when GPS or internet is weak, steps indoors and on a treadmill do not count, and cash only comes by selling tokens on an outside exchange. AliDropship also warns of scams using the brand, such as fake activation codes and phishing wallets. It had 4.2 stars from about 3,000 App Store ratings.

Sweatcoin

Sweatcoin pays about 1 sweatcoin per 1,000 verified steps after a 5% commission, on up to 10,000 steps a day for free.

What it does well: it counts steps in the background, needs no purchase, and lets you move coins into the SWEAT token through Sweat Wallet if you want crypto. It had 4.5 stars from about 401,000 App Store ratings.

Its limits: no cash-out to PayPal or a bank (DollarSprout), and daily bonuses come from watching ads.

WeWard

WeWard pays Wards for daily steps, which you convert before midnight and cash out by PayPal, Venmo or bank.

What it does well: real money with no crypto involved, team events and collectible cards, and 4.9 stars from about 127,000 App Store ratings.

Its limits: RunMatch estimates $1.75 to $3.00 a month at 10,000 steps a day, there is no cash-out in your first 14 days, and the free version shows ads.

Macadam

Macadam, a Spanish company, pays coins at step milestones: 75 at 10,000 steps up to 200 at 20,000, per its site. You validate each day's steps before midnight, usually by watching an ad.

What it does well: payouts to a bank account, map spots that make walks feel like exploring, no GPS needed, and 4.8 stars from about 16,000 US App Store ratings.

Its limits: Household Money Saving estimates about 10 to 15 pounds a year, ads are mandatory, and App Store reviewers say cashing out without a European bank account is hard.

Runtopia

Runtopia, from Chinese fitness company Codoon, tracks runs and walks with GPS and pays Sports Coins (SPC) for completed tasks. Finder cites 10 SPC for a 5 km run and 5 SPC for a 3 km walk.

What it does well: a full run tracker with voice guidance and training plans, coins you can spend on PayPal cash or gift cards, and 4.7 stars from about 2,600 App Store ratings.

Its limits: Finder found a $3.99 Premium month cost 798 SPC, the cash rate is not listed on their site as of October 2026, and the best rewards need Premium at $9.99 a month.

Evidation

Evidation gives points for synced activity, sleep and workouts, plus larger amounts for surveys and optional studies. 10,000 points pay $10.

What it does well: cash by PayPal or direct deposit, many trackers, and 4.6 stars from about 29,000 App Store ratings.

Its limits: US residents aged 18 or older only, you share health data, and RunMatch estimates walking alone at about $0.24 a month.

Paceline

Paceline counts minutes with a raised heart rate from your wearable. Reach 150 minutes a week and you earn Pacepoints for partner-brand offers and gift cards.

What it does well: any workout counts, nothing is at risk, and it had 4.8 stars from about 19,000 App Store ratings.

Its limits: iPhone only, a subscription at $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and reviewers say rewards have shrunk.

Who each one suits

  • Sweatcoin: you still want a crypto option but no upfront purchase.
  • WeWard: you want small cash payouts for walking.
  • Macadam: you live in Europe and want money paid to your bank.
  • Runtopia: you liked STEPN's run tracking and want coins for runs.
  • Evidation: you are a US adult who will answer surveys for cash.
  • Paceline: you train with a heart-rate wearable and want brand rewards.

This is Steppa's blog, so one note on our own app. If you want walking to decide a cash prize without tokens or sneakers, Steppa runs step challenges on iPhone: you pay a stake, hit one daily goal every day, and the finishers split the whole pool. Steps come from Apple Health, typed-in steps never count, and payouts can go to PayPal. For most players a service fee of $0.50 plus 4% of the stake is shown before you pay. Paid play is for adults where available under its Terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to STEPN?

If you want to stay close to crypto, Sweatcoin pays free coins for steps and lets you convert them into the SWEAT token, with no sneaker to buy. If you want cash, WeWard pays by PayPal, Venmo or bank, and Evidation pays US adults by PayPal or direct deposit. If you liked tracking runs, Runtopia pays Sports Coins for GPS-tracked runs and walks.

Is STEPN still worth it in 2026?

For most people, probably not. AliDropship's May 2026 review estimates about $1 to $2 a day and around 250 days to earn back a $200 setup. The GST token fell from about $9 at its April 2022 high to well under one cent, down more than 99%. Entry sneakers now cost about $20 to $50 by the same review, against about $600 at the 2022 peak.

Is there a move-to-earn app with no upfront cost?

Yes, every app on this list is free to download and start. Sweatcoin, WeWard and Macadam pay for daily steps, Runtopia pays coins for runs and walks, Evidation gives points for activity and surveys, and Paceline gives points for heart-rate minutes. Some offer paid upgrades, such as Sweatcoin Premium at $4.99 a month, but none requires a purchase before you can earn.

Can you cash out STEPN earnings to a bank?

Not directly. STEPN pays GST and GMT tokens into its built-in wallet. To get cash, you swap them and sell them on an outside crypto exchange, then withdraw from there. Apps such as WeWard and Macadam pay to a bank account, and Evidation pays by PayPal or direct deposit, though the amounts for walking alone are small.
