Pick Sweatcoin if you want something free that rewards the steps you already take. Pick STEPN only if you are comfortable with crypto and can afford to lose what you spend on a sneaker. Neither pays cash straight to a bank: Sweatcoin pays in coins and a crypto token, and STEPN pays in tokens you sell on an exchange.

Key Takeaways

  • Sweatcoin is free and pays coins for everyday steps; STEPN needs an NFT sneaker bought with crypto before you earn anything.
  • Sweatcoin turns 1,000 steps into about 1 coin after a 5% commission; STEPN pays GST tokens per minute of GPS-tracked outdoor movement.
  • Neither pays cash directly: Sweatcoin coins go to its marketplace, charity or the SWEAT token, and STEPN tokens must be sold on an outside exchange.
  • STEPN's GST token is down more than 99% from its April 2022 high, and AliDropship estimates about 250 days to earn back a $200 setup.
  • Sweatcoin counts steps indoors and out; STEPN earns only outdoors with a strong GPS signal.

The deeper difference is risk. Sweatcoin costs nothing to start and its worst case is a small reward. STEPN asks you to buy an NFT sneaker first, and its main token has fallen more than 99% since 2022, so what you earn in dollars depends on the crypto market.

How each one works

Sweatcoin counts your steps in the background. Every 1,000 verified steps become about 1 sweatcoin after the company keeps a 5% commission, so 10,000 steps earn 9.5 coins, per its help center. Free users earn on up to 10,000 steps a day, and Premium raises that to 20,000. Daily bonuses come from watching ads. Sweatcoin is made by Sweatco Ltd in the UK.

STEPN is a crypto game from FindSatoshi Lab. You set up its built-in wallet, buy at least one NFT sneaker, then walk or run outdoors with GPS on. Each sneaker gives Energy, and one point of Energy buys five minutes of earning; Energy refills every six hours, per the whitepaper. Earned GST and GMT tokens pay for repairs and upgrades, or can be swapped and sold.

What it costs and what you get

Sweatcoin is free. Premium costs $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year on the US App Store and doubles the daily step cap. RunMatch estimates about 285 sweatcoins a month at 10,000 steps a day, and Honeygain valued 1,000 coins at about $1.80 in June 2026. DollarSprout's long-term reviewer estimates about $0.30 a month in passive value at the free cap.

STEPN's app is free, but you cannot earn without a sneaker. AliDropship put entry sneakers at about $20 to $50 in May 2026, against about $600 at the 2022 peak, and estimated about $1 to $2 a day in earnings, or around 250 days to earn back a $200 setup. Repairs and level-ups cost tokens, and the App Store lists a Monthly VIP at $19.99 and Spark packs from $1 to $30.

How steps are checked

Sweatcoin reads the phone's motion sensors and Apple Watch, and runs its own validation to filter out shakes and bumps. DollarSprout measured about 65% of steps converting to coins, and notes there is no Fitbit integration.

STEPN does not count steps at all. It tracks GPS movement outdoors, earns nothing on a treadmill or with weak GPS, and flags movement that looks like a scooter, a car or a phone on a pet, per its whitepaper.

Getting paid

Sweatcoin coins cannot go to PayPal, a bank or a check, per DollarSprout and RunMatch. You spend them on marketplace offers, donate them, or turn steps into the SWEAT token in the separate Sweat Wallet app, which mints SWEAT for 3,000 to 10,000 steps a day on the free plan.

STEPN has no direct cash-out. You swap tokens in the app wallet and sell them for money on an outside crypto exchange, or resell sneakers on its marketplace. AliDropship also warns about scams that use the STEPN name, such as fake activation codes and phishing wallets.

Who each one suits

  • Sweatcoin: you want a free background app, like discounts or charity giving, and do not need cash.
  • STEPN: you already use crypto, enjoy collecting and levelling gear, run outdoors, and accept losing your setup cost.
  • Neither: you want cash for steps without crypto. Our lists of Sweatcoin alternatives and STEPN alternatives cover apps that pay by PayPal or bank.

This is Steppa's blog, so one note on our own app. If you want cash prizes for steps with no crypto involved, Steppa runs step challenges on iPhone: you pay a stake, hit one daily goal every day, and the finishers split the whole pool, with payouts to PayPal. Unlike Sweatcoin, you can lose your stake if you miss a day. For most players a service fee of $0.50 plus 4% of the stake is shown before you pay. Paid play is for adults where available under its Terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sweatcoin or STEPN better?

For most walkers, Sweatcoin is the safer pick: it is free, counts steps in the background and puts no money at risk. STEPN suits people who already use crypto wallets, enjoy collecting and levelling gear, and accept that they may lose what they spend on a sneaker. Reviewers describe STEPN as the riskier of the two, because earnings follow a token that has fallen sharply since 2022.

Does STEPN still pay in 2026?

It still pays tokens, but much less in dollars than at its peak. AliDropship wrote in May 2026 that entry sneakers cost about $20 to $50, against about $600 in 2022, and estimated earnings of about $1 to $2 a day. GST has fallen more than 99% from about $9 in April 2022. Tokens must be sold on an outside exchange to become cash.

Can you cash out Sweatcoin?

Not to a bank or PayPal. DollarSprout and RunMatch both say sweatcoins cannot be withdrawn as money. You can spend them on marketplace offers, donate them to charity, or convert steps into the SWEAT crypto token through the separate Sweat Wallet app. Honeygain wrote in June 2026 that 1,000 sweatcoins were worth about $1.80, and RunMatch estimates about 285 coins a month at 10,000 steps a day.

Does STEPN count treadmill or indoor steps?

No. STEPN's whitepaper says earning needs GPS outdoors, and weak GPS or a poor internet connection earns nothing. It also flags movement that looks like a scooter, a car or a phone strapped to a pet. Sweatcoin counts steps from your phone's motion sensors and Apple Watch, but its validation filters out some steps; DollarSprout measured about 65% converting to coins.
